St. Petersburg's informatics athletes came up triumps at the western European regional university Olympics in computer programming in Amsterdam earlier this month.

Student from the city's Precision Mechanics and optics State University (PITMO) scooped the top awards, with the team from St. Petersburg State University and Moskow State University fourth and sixth respectively

Second-year students Alexander Anikin and Roman Yelizarov and third-year student Denis Kislovsky were the best and the same time the youngest out of 27 teams from the biggest universities from seven countries.

The victory gave PITMO students the opportunity to compete in the World Olympics in Philadelphia next February, where they will compete for the world championship against 17 other teams.

This Student Olympics is the most prominent in the computer world. It is held by the Association for Computing Machinery and sponsored by Microsoft.
